You want to launch your website to build your brand and reach more customers online.

Before you can create the website, you need a domain name. This must be one of the main reasons you need to know what is a domain registrar.

A domain registrar is an accredited company that helps you register, manage, and renew your domain name.

It’s the place where you go to secure your perfect address, like yourbusiness.co.ke, yourcafe.com, or any other domain for your business.

In Kenya alone, over 124,600 .ke domains have already been registered, showing just how quickly the digital space is growing.

This guide explains everything you need to know about domain registrars in simple terms.

You’ll learn:

  • How they work
  • The full ecosystem (including KeNIC, which manages .ke domains)
  • How licensing and accreditation work both locally and globally
  • Key players like Truehost, and most importantly, how to choose the right one for your needs.

Let’s go through it step by step so you can register your domain with confidence and get your website online without unnecessary stress.

What Exactly Is a Domain Registrar?

As mentioned in the introduction, a domain registrar is an accredited company that helps you register, manage, and renew your domain name.

It serves as your gateway to securing an online address like yourbusiness.co.ke or yourcafe.com.

It works as your one-stop shop for domains.

You search to see if your desired name is available, complete the registration if it is free, and handle everything afterward through them.

Here is what domain registrars actually do:

  • Check if your desired domain name is available
  • Process new registrations and renewals
  • Handle transfers when you want to switch to another provider
  • Manage DNS settings so your website loads correctly
  • Maintain WHOIS or RDAP records
  • Offer privacy protection for your personal information
  • Often bundle extras like hosting, email, or SSL certificates

Many registrars also support convenient local payment options like M-Pesa.

A domain registrar does not own the master database of all domains. That responsibility belongs to the registry. For example, KeNIC manages the .ke registry in Kenya.

You do not actually buy a domain outright. Instead, you lease it, usually for periods of 1 to 10 years at a time.

One common confusion is mixing up a domain registrar with a web host. They serve different roles.

Many providers, including Truehost, bundle both services together so you do not have to manage separate accounts.

Registrar vs. Registry vs. Registrant vs. Regulators

Let’s clear up the different roles in the domain space. These four terms often get mixed up, so here is a simple comparison:

RoleWho it isWhat they do for you
RegistrantYou (the person or business looking for a domain name)Own and pay for the domain; decide how it is used
RegistrarAccredited seller (e.g. Truehost)Handles your requests and talks to the registry on your behalf
RegistryManages the TLD database (KeNIC for all .ke domains)Keeps the official record of all domains under that extension
RegulatorsOversight bodies (ICANN (global) + Communications Authority of Kenya (local))Set rules and ensure fair play

For .ke domains, everything stays local. .co.ke is meant for commercial use, .or.ke for organizations, and there are other extensions depending on your needs.

These are country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) managed exclusively by KeNIC in Nairobi.

The process is straightforward. When you register a .ke domain, your registrar talks directly to KeNIC using secure systems.

You never have to deal with the registry yourself.

This setup keeps things fast and simple, with stronger local relevance and better performance inside Kenya.

How Domain Registrars Are Licensed and Accredited

Not every company can sell domains. Strict rules protect you.

For global domains like .com or .net, registrars must earn ICANN accreditation

That involves a detailed application, a US $3,500 (KSh 454,300) fee, signing the Registrar Accreditation Agreement, data escrow requirements, and ongoing compliance checks.

Kenyan registrars who want to sell international domains often hold this ICANN accreditation too.

For .ke domains, it’s different and simpler for local players. KeNIC (not ICANN) accredits and licenses registrars.

Currently, there are around 533 active KeNIC-accredited registrars. KeNIC operates under the Communications Authority of Kenya and never sells domains directly to the public. You must go through one of their accredited partners.

This system keeps everything transparent and locally accountable.

How Registrars Set Domain Prices

Domain registrars do not set the base cost themselves. Pricing starts at the registry level and is then adjusted by the registrar.

Here’s the step-by-step breakdown:

1) Registry Sets the Wholesale (Base) Price

The registry (e.g., KeNIC for all .ke domains) determines the wholesale fee that accredited registrars must pay to register, renew, or transfer a domain.

KeNIC, as the official manager of Kenya’s .ke country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), periodically reviews and adjusts these fees.

These adjustments are based on operational costs, inflation, policy goals, and market conditions.

For example, in February 2025, KeNIC increased the wholesale price for third-level domains like .co.ke by 43% (from KSh 700 + VAT to KSh 999 + VAT), while second-level .ke domains remained at KSh 2,500 + VAT, and a new transfer fee of KSh 999 + VAT was introduced.

Registrars must pay this wholesale amount directly to the registry for each transaction.

2) Registrars Add Their Markup (Profit Margin)

After paying the registry’s wholesale fee, each registrar decides how much extra to charge customers (the retail price). This markup covers:

  • Operational costs (staff, servers, billing systems, customer support, compliance with KeNIC rules)
  • Business overheads and profit
  • Risk buffers (e.g., currency fluctuations for international registrars)
  • Marketing and customer acquisition expenses

Markups vary significantly between registrars. Some keep them low to attract high volume, while others charge more to fund premium support or extra features.

3) Value-Added Services and Bundling

Many registrars increase the final price (or offer discounts) by bundling or adding services such as:

  • Web hosting packages
  • SSL certificates / security tools
  • DNS management tools
  • Email hosting
  • Website builders
  • WHOIS privacy protection
  • Promotional first-year discounts (common tactic to attract new customers renewal prices are often higher and more stable)

Bundling these services can make the total cost appear lower initially or justify a higher overall price.

Who are Domain Resellers

Domain resellers buy domain names in bulk from accredited registrars and hosts like Truehost, then sell them to customers like you, usually at a markup.

How Resellers Differ from Accredited Registrars

  • They don’t have direct ICANN or KeNIC accreditation
  • They partner with an accredited registrar to offer domains
  • Your domain is technically sponsored by the underlying registrar (not the reseller)

How Domain Resellers Operate

  • They join reseller programs run by accredited registrars
  • This gives them access to special wholesale prices that normal customers don’t get
  • They then add their own markup and sell the domains to you

Value-Added Services They Provide

Many resellers make things easier by bundling domains with other useful services:

  • Hosting packages
  • Security products (SSL certificates, malware protection, etc.)
  • Web design services
  • Marketing tools

This way, you can get everything you need to launch and run your website in one convenient place with simpler billing.
