Your first website starts with the build

Edit the site yourself

A builder suits a business owner who wants to edit pages directly. Gather the text and images you need, then compare the editing tools with the kind of site you intend to run.

Use WordPress

A WordPress project needs hosting, a configured site and someone to maintain it. Decide which features the site needs before selecting themes or extensions, and include routine updates in the handover plan.

Commission a website

A design service suits a build you want a team to deliver. Prepare the required pages, customer action and content responsibilities before choosing the package.

Keep an existing website move organised

Your current domain, website files and mailboxes may live with different providers. List them before arranging a move so you know which service each change affects.

For example, a new hosting account may hold the website while the original mailboxes continue receiving messages elsewhere. Keep that arrangement explicit in your plan. The person changing DNS needs the correct destination for each service and a way to test both the website and incoming email.

Questions about your next project

I am opening a practice. What should the website do first?

Make it easy for a prospective client to see your services, location and contact route. Gather those details before choosing a build tool or commissioning the pages. Once the content is clear, compare the services here against the way you want to maintain the site.

Our business already has a name. How do we use it online?

Check an address that customers can spell and remember, then plan where it will point. You might use it for a business site, employee email or both. Registering the name and setting up those services are distinct parts of the project.

We sell products. Is an information site enough?

An information site can display products and receive enquiries. A storefront adds an ordering journey. Decide whether you need customers to pay online, request a quote or contact a salesperson, then review the chosen product’s supported features against that decision.

A designer is building our site. What should we own?

Keep control of the business domain and the relevant customer account. Agree how the designer will receive access and how you will handle the handover. The project brief should name the person responsible for content approval, launch and future maintenance.

I want to try an idea before committing to a large project. Where should I begin?

Define the smallest useful result: a page for enquiries, a small product collection or a place to share project files. Compare the corresponding service and its full billing commitment. Add features when the trial gives you a reason to need them.

Our team works across branches. What information should we collect?

List the people who need accounts, the documents they handle and the systems the branches already use. Identify who can approve changes. Email, file-sharing and business applications solve different parts of that work, so search for the service that fits the immediate requirement.

We are changing providers. How do we avoid losing track of the move?

Make a simple list of the domain registration, website, database and mail service, with an owner for each. Plan a test of the destination before switching traffic. The existing provider should remain available while you compare the new site and check incoming mail.

The comparison shows a monthly figure. What will the first invoice contain?

Use the selected term’s total as the budgeting figure. For a longer prepaid period, the displayed monthly equivalent is a comparison rate. Review the amount due, renewal terms and any selected additions on the order before paying.

Someone already manages our Truehost services. Should I create another account?

Ask the account owner how the business organises orders and access. Keeping a project’s services together can simplify administration. Agree who may place an order and who will receive billing information before setting up a separate account.

I cannot find the exact software we need. What details will help?

Share the application name, deployment requirements and expected use with our team. Include any integrations and the date you need it working. A named workload gives the conversation a useful starting point when an ordinary website package may not fit.
