You need a business email address, and your shilling budget is tight. Two Kenyan names keep appearing on your shortlist. Both look good, so the choice feels risky.

I compared Truehost vs HostAfrica email hosting plan by plan. I priced five team sizes in Kenyan shillings. You get the verdict first, then the numbers behind it.

Here is how the two stack up side by side.

Truehost vs HostAfrica Email Hosting at a Glance

One row explains most of the gap. HostAfrica charges per user, while Truehost sells fixed bundles. Let me show what that does to your bill.

What You Pay at 1, 3, 5, 10, and 20 Mailboxes

Per-user pricing looks cheap for one person. It climbs with every hire. Bundle pricing stays flat until you outgrow the plan.

20 mailboxesEnterprise (10 GB each)KSh 12,000KSh 30,840KSh 61,680

HostAfrica’s regular entry price is KSh 257 per user monthly. Its promo halves that to KSh 128.50. The promo page I reviewed listed an end date of 30 September 2026, so confirm the current price before you pay.

The gap widens as your team grows. At 20 staff, Truehost Enterprise costs KSh 12,000 a year. The same team pays KSh 61,680 at HostAfrica’s regular rate. Even on promo, the difference is KSh 18,840 every year.

Storage changes the picture for tiny teams. Truehost Starter gives one mailbox 3 GB, and Pro gives each of three mailboxes 5 GB. HostAfrica gives 10 GB from the first mailbox. From five mailboxes up, Truehost matches that 10 GB.

HostAfrica’s Workspace tier deserves its own look. It costs KSh 386 per user monthly at regular price, or KSh 4,632 a year. Five users pay KSh 23,160 for 50 GB each plus office tools. Truehost includes the same office tools in every plan, though each mailbox caps at 10 GB.

Price is only half the story, so let me cover where each provider leads.

Where HostAfrica Gives You More

HostAfrica earns its higher price in several areas. These points can decide the choice for some teams.

•     Bigger mailboxes. You get 10 GB on the entry plan and 50 GB on Workspace.

•     Flexible billing. You can pay monthly, quarterly, every two years, or annually, and cancel anytime.

•     AI email tools. Workspace includes email summaries, tone control, and reply drafting.

•     Published uptime. HostAfrica lists a 99.9% uptime guarantee on its email page.

•     Free migration tool. You can import mail from Gmail, Microsoft 365, Exchange, and cPanel.

•     Public reputation. It shows a 4.9 Trustpilot score from 2,816 reviews. Those reviews cover the whole company, not email alone.

Heavy attachment senders should weigh the storage point carefully. A legal or design team fills 10 GB faster than a freelancer does. Monthly billing also suits anyone who wants to test before committing.

Where Truehost Gives You More

Truehost wins on the number most buyers check first. It also bundles useful extras into every tier.

•     Much lower cost at scale. Twenty mailboxes cost KSh 12,000 a year, not KSh 30,840 or more.

•     Flat bundles. A new hire does not add a new monthly bill until you outgrow the plan.

•     Office tools in every tier. Docs, Sheets, and Presentations come with Starter too.

•     Security on every tier. You get 2FA, anti-virus checks, and anti-spam filtering from KSh 672.

•     Local billing. Truehost lists M-Pesa among its payment options.

•     One account. You can register your .co.ke domain, which Truehost lists at KSh 999, and host your email together.

These strengths share one theme. Truehost keeps the bill small and predictable. Still, the plan has limits you should know before you buy.

Where Truehost Falls Short

•     10 GB mailbox cap. Even Enterprise stops at 10 GB per person.

•     Annual billing only. You pay for the full year upfront.

•     Fixed mailbox counts. Plans come in 1, 3, 5, 10, and 20 mailboxes.

•     Small Starter inbox. Three GB fills fast with large attachments.

•     Sales calls. Some Kenyan users on Reddit say Truehost calls them often.

Most small teams stay under 10 GB for a long time. Saving big files to drive storage keeps inboxes light. Teams that send huge files daily should look at HostAfrica Workspace instead.

Support, Trust, and Domain Costs

Both providers offer chat and email support. Truehost lists support day and night. HostAfrica lists 24/7 support on its email page, but its web-hosting comparison puts Kenyan support at 07:00 to 23:00 daily. Check the hours that apply to your plan.

Kenyan users on Reddit lean mixed on both brands. Some praise HostAfrica for cheap new domains and promos. Others say Truehost has the lower renewal fees. A few complain about Truehost’s sales calls.

Your email address needs a domain, so check renewal prices on both sites. A cheap first year can hide a pricier second year. Compare the full two-year cost before you decide.

Is the Cheaper Plan Safe?

A low price should not mean weak protection. Check what each plan includes at the entry tier. Some hosts keep security features for pricier plans.

Truehost includes 2FA, anti-virus checks, and anti-spam filtering on all five Workplace tiers. HostAfrica lists anti-spam, anti-virus, and anti-phishing protection on its email plans. Both cover the basics a small business needs.

Protection also depends on habits. Turn on strong passwords for every mailbox. Train your staff to spot phishing, because filters never catch everything.

Four Questions to Answer Before You Pay

Prices on both sites change, so ask these questions first. Each one prevents a surprise later.

1)    What does the plan cost at renewal, not only in year one?

2)    How much storage will each person need in two years?

3)    Do I want to pay for a full year upfront?

4)    Which office and security tools come with the tier I picked?

Write your answers down before you open either checkout page. Your answers usually point to one provider within a minute.

How Fast Can You Switch?

Both providers set you up quickly. HostAfrica says your mailbox is ready once you create your credentials, and its tool imports old mail in a few clicks. Truehost provides the DNS values you copy into your domain settings.

Either way, you point your MX records to the new provider. Add SPF and DKIM records so your mail reaches inboxes. Keep your old mailbox active for two weeks as a safety net.

Moving later is also possible. You can start with Truehost’s low-cost bundle and migrate if you outgrow it. That makes the cheaper first step a low-risk one.

Which Provider Fits Your Business?

Match the choice to your team and your inbox habits.

•     Freelancer or solo consultant: Choose Truehost Starter at KSh 672 a year.

•     Two to five staff: Choose Truehost Pro or Business for the lowest cost.

•     Six to twenty staff: Choose Truehost Premium or Enterprise to avoid per-seat bills.

•     Large attachments every day: Choose HostAfrica Workspace for 50 GB per user.

•     Want to test month to month: Choose HostAfrica for its flexible billing.

•     Want AI email summaries: Choose HostAfrica Workspace.

Lock In Your Professional Email Before Your Next Invoice Goes Out

Truehost offers better value for most Kenyan small businesses. It costs a fraction of HostAfrica at five mailboxes or more. It also bundles office tools and security into every tier.

HostAfrica is the better pick for big mailboxes, AI tools, and monthly billing. Be honest about your storage needs, then choose. A free Gmail address costs you trust with every invoice you send.
