Kenya has 135,653 registered .ke domain names, according to the KeNIC statistics I checked on 9 September 2026.
That total covers direct .ke names and endings such as .co.ke, .or.ke and .ac.ke.
The biggest source of growth is .co.ke, while direct .ke is expanding faster in percentage terms.
Kenya’s domain base has grown 14.8% since December
The Communications Authority of Kenya recorded 118,171 registrations at 31 December 2025 in its December report.
By 9 September, the total had increased by 17,482, or 14.8% year to date.

The March figures give a full year-on-year comparison: 15,247 more domains, or 14.0% growth, between March 2025 and March 2026.
Growth also accelerated at the start of 2026. January–March added 6,327 net registrations, more than twice the preceding quarter’s 2,518.

The three restricted categories account for 3,577 registrations:
.ac.ke: qualifying higher-education institutions..sc.ke: schools..go.ke: government bodies.
KeNIC requires supporting documents for these categories; its product definitions explain the requirements.
Our domain extensions guide covers the purpose of each ending.
.co.ke supplies nearly 90% of the net growth
.co.ke accounts for 89.7% of the net increase since December. The other nine categories share the remaining 10.3%.

Direct .ke grew 18.1%, compared with .co.ke‘s 14.9%. Its smaller starting base explains why the faster growth rate produced fewer additional names.
The clearest example is .mobi.ke: it grew 250%, the highest rate of any category, but moved from just 22 to 77 registrations. That adds only 55 names to the national total.
.co.ke remains Kenya’s main commercial domain ending. You can check registration options on our .co.ke domains page.
New registrations, renewals and net growth
KeNIC’s dashboard also reports activity over the previous 30 days:
Activity | Domains |
|---|---|
New registrations | 6,377 |
Renewed domains | 5,887 |
Source: KeNIC’s rolling 30-day counters, checked 9 September 2026.
New registrations add names; renewals keep existing names registered. Adding the two counters would overstate growth. The net change also depends on names leaving the register and any registry adjustments.
The dashboard also lacks the number of domains due for renewal, so it cannot establish a renewal rate.
The year to June 2025 shows how losses in one category offset gains elsewhere. .co.ke gained 8,643 registrations, yet the national total grew by only 4,513.
Over the same period, .me.ke fell from 5,806 to 210. CA records the decline in its June 2025 report but gives no cause for it.
For your own domain, assign renewal responsibility clearly: who receives notices, approves payment and controls the account. Check this especially if a developer or former employee registered it.
KeNIC’s year-end target still requires 23,647 more domains
KeNIC’s June 2026 newsletter sets a target of 159,300 domains by the end of 2026.
By 9 September, the registry had reached 85.2% of its target. It still needed 23,647 net additions.
That gap exceeds the 17,482 net additions recorded since December. KeNIC needs more growth in the remaining months than it achieved in the first eight months and nine days of 2026.
Choosing and keeping your Kenyan domain
Compare .co.ke and direct .ke for your business name, including the renewal price. For a three-year budget, use:
Registration + year-two renewal + year-three renewal.
This comparison includes the ongoing cost after any introductory discount. Use the applicable rate for each year.

About the figures: These counts cover registrations in the .ke family, rather than unique businesses or active websites. CA’s historical tables use KeNIC data; the September figures come from the registry’s live dashboard.
