The domain life cycle describes the complete journey of a domain name, starting from the moment it becomes available and is registered.

It then continues through years of active use before eventually reaching expiry.

After expiry, the domain is released back into the pool, where it becomes available for anyone to claim again.

At Truehost, we help Kenyan businesses, bloggers, NGOs, and individuals manage the entire domain life cycle each year.

Our services are affordable in Kenyan Shillings (KES), transparent, and hassle-free, with local support you can call or visit.

In this guide, I break down each stage of the domain life cycle in clear, practical detail.

You’ll learn what happens at each step, the timelines involved, and what actions you can or cannot take.

You’ll also see how Truehost’s tools, automated systems, and local support team protect your domain from start to finish, giving you peace of mind.

Key Stages of the Domain Life Cycle Explained

A domain name typically moves through these seven main stages over its lifetime.

Stage 1: Available

Stage 2: Registered

Stage 3: Expired

Stage 4: Grace Period

Stage 5: Redemption Period

Stage 6: Pending Delete

Stage 7: Available Again

Each stage has specific rules, timelines, and consequences that vary slightly depending on the extension (.com, .co.ke, .net, etc.).

Let’s explain each stage more deeply below.

Stage 1: Available

This is the very first stage, where the domain name has not yet been registered by anyone.

It is completely free for anyone in the world to search for and claim on a first-come, first-served basis.

For example, if you check the availability of a domain name like freshbakes.co.ke, take a look at the screenshot below.

Screenshot of Truehost Domain search tool

You’ll notice that the domain is marked as available, meaning no one has registered it yet.

If it were already taken, the tool would instead show its availability under other extensions.

As shown in the image, you can check domain availability instantly using Truehost’s domain search tool.

If the domain is available, you can go ahead and register it right away for 1, 2, 5, or even up to 10 years.

Pro tip: Popular or brandable names can disappear quickly, especially valuable .co.ke or .com domains, so act fast when you find the perfect one.

Stage 2: Registered (Active)

Once you successfully register the domain, it enters the Registered or Active stage and officially belongs to you (the registrant).

This is the longest and most productive phase of the domain life cycle.

Registration periods are flexible: most people start with 1 year, but you can choose 2, 5, or even the maximum 10 years for maximum security and often better pricing.

For instance, the domain below was registered for 1 year period.

During this time, the domain is fully under your control.

You can point it to a website, set up professional emails (e.g., [email protected]), manage DNS records, add privacy protection, and use it for your online presence.

Your responsibility: You must renew the domain before it expires to keep ownership. Missing this is the most common way domains are lost.

With Truehost, you get easy reminders, one-click renewal options, and the ability to set automatic renewal so you never have to worry about forgetting.

Stage 3: Expired

This stage begins the moment the registration period ends, and you have not renewed the domain.

On Day 0 (the exact expiry date), the domain expires.

Your website and email services usually stop working immediately (or very soon after), even though you technically still own it for a short buffer.

The domain enters a suspended or parked state, often showing a default “expired” page instead of your content.

This is your first warning signal. For most international domains like .com, the window to act cheaply is short.

For Kenyan .co.ke domains managed through KeNIC, the grace period is often longer (up to 90 days in some cases), giving Kenyan users extra breathing room.

Stage 4: Grace Period (Renewal Grace Period)

Right after expiry, the domain enters a protected Grace Period where you can still renew it at the normal, affordable price, with no extra penalties.

For most gTLDs (.com, .net, .org): Typically 30–45 days.

For .co.ke and other Kenyan extensions: Often up to 90 days, which is especially helpful for busy Kenyan businesses.

During this time, the domain remains in your Truehost account, and you can renew it instantly with just a few clicks or via auto-renewal.

Services like website and email may remain offline, so acting quickly prevents any downtime or loss of traffic/customers.

You still have time to fix things without extra cost that’s why checking your expiry dates regularly pays off.

Stage 5: Redemption Period

If the domain is not renewed during the Grace Period, it moves into the more serious Redemption Period.

This usually lasts 30 days (standard for most TLDs).

Recovery is still possible, but it becomes more expensive and complicated.

You’ll pay the normal renewal fee plus a significant redemption/restoration fee charged by the registry.

The domain is now under stricter control: WHOIS information may start to change or disappear, and full functionality is suspended.

At Truehost, our support team can guide you through the redemption process quickly if needed, often saving you time and stress compared to dealing with international registrars.

Stage 6: Pending Delete

Once the Redemption Period ends without action, the domain enters the final Pending Delete stage.

This is a short, locked window, typically exactly 5 days for most gTLDs like .com.

No one (not even the original owner) can renew, restore, transfer, or modify the domain. It is queued for automatic deletion by the registry.

This is the true point of no return after these few days, the domain is released back to the public.

Learn more about the redemption period here.

Stage 7: Available Again (Released/Dropped)

At the end of the Pending Delete stage, the domain is fully deleted from the registry database and becomes available for anyone to register again on a first-come, first-served basis.

It returns to Stage 1 (Available), and the entire domain life cycle can start over with a new owner.

Popular dropped domains are often snapped up instantly by domain investors or competitors using automated tools.

Another reason why timely renewal with Truehost is so important.

Simple Timeline Example (for a typical .com or similar gTLD)

Here is a clear, day-by-day breakdown of what usually happens after a domain expires (note: exact days can vary slightly by registry and TLD; .co.ke often offers longer grace windows):

Days After ExpiryStatusWhat You Can Do
Day 0Domain ExpiresRenew at normal price (ideally)
Day 1–30 (or up to 45/90 for .ke)Grace PeriodEasy renewal from your dashboard
Day 31–60Redemption PeriodRestore with extra fee
Day 61–65Pending DeleteNothing—locked
Day 66+Available AgainAnyone can register it

This table shows why acting early saves you money and headaches.

For .co.ke domains, you often get even more days in the grace period, but don’t rely on that alone set reminders now.
