5 Best Online Jobs In Kenya For Students

Last updated on June 16th, 2023 at 11:43 am

In this article, you will find the best online jobs in Kenya for students. These are some of the epic ideas you can engage now and start making money while studying.

I was once a student, so I understand how much it means to have some extra cash in your pocket.

I know how it feels to luck food and have no one to call for help.

See, when I was in my first year on campus, the struggle was real. The school ‘MESS’ food was really expensive. The only cheap meal in there was UGALI and SKUMA at Kshs. 20!

But let’s face it, you can’t be taking the same menu the whole week, can you?

So when the suffering got real, I started looking for ways to earn some extra cash without actually jeopardizing my studies, after all, that’s what brought me there, right?

Either way, no concentration with an empty stomach.

If you are in such a situation or even worse, here are some of the best online jobs in Kenya for students.

1). Teach Online

Yes, you can start teaching online now in Kenya and make money.

In fact, this should be your first idea considering you are a student, which means you have something to offer.

To get started, first identify a subject you understand well. It can be science, maths, or even languages.

To make this easier, look at what you are studying in college or campus, and think of something that you can teach within that course.

For example;

If you are studying a math-related course, consider offering maths lessons to high schoolers in your area.

Something to note;

Your clients don’t have to be only high school kids, you can take on your college mates or even coursemates.

They must be struggling with some unit, right?

Find out what it is and figure out how you can help them.

2). Social Media Manager

This is one of the best online jobs in Kenya for students. In fact, it is a job that took me through campus.

Remember me earlier telling you how life was not so kind to me?

Well, the only online job in Kenya that made sense to me at the time was working as a social media manager.

My work was to help businesses manage their social media accounts. This includes posting on their behalf on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and any other account they have.

It was easy getting started.

All I did was immerse myself in learning as much as I could about social media management.

This was the easy step for me considering I was studying a marketing course.

Once I had gathered enough knowledge and skills, the next step was finding clients.

To be honest, this is the hardest part considering you cannot just trust a stranger with your social media accounts.

The other challenge was getting paid.

Some clients would just bail on me and blatantly refuse to pay.

In fact, someone still owes me around 20K for services rendered.

This must not deter you though, there are good people out there, you just have to be good at identifying them. Do not jump on offers just because you want to earn.

3). Freelance Writing

Social media management wasn’t the only online jobs in Kenya for students that I engaged in, I also did some freelance writing work.

See, once I figured I could be earning more from one client when I offer more services, I jumped on writing.

Freelance writing is simply helping clients write their content, be it blog posts, product descriptions, SEO content, or Ad copy, and then getting paid for it.

I found success doing blog posts for clients and charging per word.

For example;

I would write 2K word blog posts and charge between Ksh 1 and 1.5 per word.

With such a rate, it means I was earning around Kshs 1,000 per 1K word article, which was really sweet.

And as I started earning more as a freelance writer in Kenya, I moved away from social media management simply for the reasons I mentioned above.

Don’t get me wrong here, freelance writing as a student in Kenya is no walk in the park.

Clients still fail to pay or you get someone who will outright undervalue your input.

The key here is developing your expertise in one specific niche or industry and then pitching your services to clients under that niche.

For example;

You can start working as a finance freelance writer in Kenya. Hon your stills under that topic and master everything there is and then start pitching.

By doing so, you have the possibility to increase your rates, thus earning more by doing less, that is the dream!

4). Blogging

Blogging is another one of the best online jobs in Kenya for students.

As a blogger in Kenya, you can make between Ksh 30,000 and Ksh 100K per month, depending on your authority, type of content, and method of monetization.

Here, I will reveal some of the best-kept secrets to achieving success.

Now, after landing on freelance writing in Kenya, my natural next step was to start blogging.

In fact, it is a requirement if you want to keep growing your writing income in Kenya.

With a blog, you get to practice more and hone your writing skills including grammar and getting your ideas across.

At the same time, a blog helps you create samples of your work you can send to clients when pitching your services.

What’s more?

If you are keen enough, that blog can start bringing you money every month.

How?

Well, once your blog in Kenya starts attracting readers, all you have to do is find a way to monetize that traffic.

And there are only two ways I have used before, and still, use to date; affiliate marketing in Kenya and Google AdSense.

If you want to learn more about affiliate marketing in Kenya, read this article. It contains every detail you will need to get started including some of the best affiliate marketing programs in Kenya.

As for Google AdSense, it is one of the easiest ways to make money online as a student in Kenya.

But there is a catch!

You need more eyeballs in your blog.

Since you earn every time someone clicks on the ads displayed on your website, the more people visit your blog, the more you earn.

5). Start  A YouTube Channel

I am sure you have seen this all around you, it is like everyone and their grandma is starting a YouTube channel in Kenya.

But why?

For the money, of course! As YouTuber in Kenya, you can make upwards of 70K per month, making it another one of the best online jobs in Kenya for students.

All you have to do is identify what you are good at and whether it can work well on video.

For example;

Comedy YouTube channels do really well in Kenya. If you are funny or willing to embarrass yourself for the almighty dollar, the floor is yours.

Personally, YouTube hasn’t been that attractive. I guess it has to do with being shy and all that introverted stuff.

But that doesn’t mean I haven’t tried.

In fact, It is much possible to start making money on YouTube in Kenya without appearing on camera.

Final thoughts

This may not be an exhaustive list of online jobs in Kenya for students, but what you just read are some proven and tested ways to make money online as a student in Kenya.

Pick one and learn everything you can about before charging money. The last thing you want is to take the money and offer mediocre work.

There are two things to help guide you through your online journey in Kenya; reliability and trust!
