Make the organisation easy to find

An address for your organisation’s work in Kenya

People visiting a community project need clear answers: what you do, where you work and how to reach you. Put those answers at an .or.ke address. This Kenyan category is intended for not-for-profit organisations, giving your reports, project updates and contact information a consistent home.

  • Record the organisation that will hold the registration.
  • Choose an address that matches the name supporters know.
  • Agree who may approve changes to the registration.

Practical uses for a .or.ke domain

A useful project website answers questions and points people towards a responsible contact. These illustrative uses describe content you might publish, not verified organisations or available names.

Project updates

Show what the organisation does

Describe a project’s purpose, location and current activities. Use dated updates so a visitor can distinguish ongoing work from a completed programme.

Public reporting

Give readers access to your reports

Publish the reports your organisation is authorised to share. Explain the period each covers, and offer an accessible way to ask questions about the work.

Volunteer enquiries

Help people find a useful next step

Set out current volunteering roles, who can apply and where enquiries should go. Remove closed opportunities instead of leaving applicants waiting for an answer.

Community contacts

Keep contact information consistent

Use the same official address in notices, partner materials and public listings. Assign somebody to review phone numbers and contact forms when a project changes staff.

Maintain the routes into your project

.or.ke Domain Management, Made Simple

Connect the domain to the services your organisation selects. Keep the website, mailbox and DNS provider details in a handover record that authorised staff can find.

Configure service records

Use the website platform’s supplied destination and test the address from a phone.

Choose the DNS host

Keep a copy of the organisation’s zone before changing the provider that answers DNS requests.

Keep the payment owner informed

Agree who receives renewal notices and who can approve the project’s payment.

Prepare a registrar handover

Retain the current registration details and request the code needed for a registrar handover.

Keep control with the organisation

Why Choose Truehost for Your .or.ke Domain?

A lasting project address needs more than an initial purchase. Record who holds it, who manages it and how the account will be recovered when people or funding arrangements change.

Connect the right records

Ask each provider for its required records and retain a copy. Changing the public website should not silently change how the office receives email.

Prepare an orderly transfer

Use the authorisation process when bringing an existing name to us. Keep its current destinations unless you are also planning a service move.

Retain account access

Give authorised people a documented way to recover the account. Review access whenever an agency engagement or volunteer role ends.

How to Use Your .or.ke Domain

Make the public site a place to learn about the organisation’s actual work. Link to approved reports, explain how to get involved and make sure somebody receives messages sent through each contact route.

  • Introduce the organisation and its work at the main public address.
  • Receive partnership enquiries through the project office’s mailbox.
  • Give the organisation’s own programmes clear internal destinations.

.or.ke Domain Name Rules

KeNIC’s label rules allow 2–63 ASCII characters before .or.ke. Use letters and digits, adding hyphens only inside the name. Check the spelling in print and aloud before putting it on public material.

Accepted in an .or.ke name

  • Use the name supporters already associate with the organisation.
  • Choose an abbreviation you can explain on a donation receipt.
  • An internal hyphen may make two project-name words easier to read.
  • Keep digits meaningful to the organisation rather than adding a temporary campaign year.

Not accepted

  • Remove blank spaces before searching the proposed address.
  • Underscores are unsuitable separators for this registration.
  • A label cannot begin or finish with a hyphen.
  • Do not use another charity’s identity simply because a spelling is available.

Your .or.ke Registration Checklist

KeNIC places nonprofits, NGOs, foundations and community-focused initiatives in this category. Provide the holder’s accurate name and contact details. The domain registration does not replace the organisation’s separate legal or regulatory obligations.

Information you need

  • Record the organisation that will hold the registration.
  • Choose an address that matches the name supporters know.
  • Agree who may approve changes to the registration.
  • Keep a second contact for account recovery and renewal.

Services and responsibilities to arrange separately

  • Legal registration of the organisation
  • A payment service for collecting donations
  • Permission to publish private project records
  • Management of volunteer or beneficiary information

Before you register

Confirm the applicant

Identify the organisation rather than the agency building its website.

Review the chosen spelling

Review the proposed name for confusion with another project or rights holder.

Choose a recovery contact

Retain a recovery route the team can use if its own email is interrupted.

An organisation may still receive enquiries after a campaign closes. Retain the address while it is needed, and budget for renewal before staff changes or a funding gap makes payment difficult.

.or.ke Domain FAQs

Questions from charities, community projects and the volunteers who maintain their websites.

Who is .or.ke intended for?

KeNIC describes .or.ke as the Kenyan category for not-for-profit organisations and NGOs, including foundations and community initiatives.

Choose it when that purpose reflects your work. A commercial trading activity may fit .co.ke better.

Does the domain give our project NGO status?

A domain is an online address, not an organisation’s legal registration. Keep any required incorporation, regulatory registration and permissions separate. Explain your actual legal status accurately on the website.

Will an .or.ke address guarantee donor confidence?

Supporters still need evidence about your work.

Publish identifiable contacts, dated reports and a clear explanation of how enquiries are handled. An address can make this information easier to find, but it cannot establish the truth of a claim.

Make the public site useful:

  • Identify the organisation and the people handling enquiries.
  • Date reports and project updates.
  • Explain the next step for a supporter or volunteer.
Can we use the name before building a website?

You can apply for an available name while preparing the site. Keep the account and renewal details with the organisation. Connect the website after its text, contact routes and forms have been checked.

Who should be named as the holder?

Use the organisation that should control the name. A volunteer or agency may help manage the site without becoming its holder. Agree access and handover responsibilities before inviting people into the account.

Can our website accept donations?

Donation collection requires a separately configured payment service and the permissions that apply to your organisation.

The domain does not supply that service. Check the payment provider, receipts and support route before inviting donations.

Check a donation service before launch:

  • Verify which organisation receives the funds.
  • Test receipts and the donor support route.
  • Publish the payment provider’s applicable terms.
Can different programmes use separate subdomains?

An organisation can use internal subdomains for its own programmes and services.

KeNIC’s third-level policy prohibits selling, leasing or transferring those subdomains to other owners. Keep programme access under the registered holder’s control.

How do we publish beneficiary stories responsibly?

Agree permission and the information that may be made public before uploading a story or photograph.

Avoid exposing private case records through public links. Assign an editor who can respond when a person asks for a correction.

What happens when a volunteer managing the site leaves?

Remove obsolete access and hand over the account inventory, service providers and renewal dates.

Confirm that the incoming administrator can recover the account. Keep the organisation’s only recovery method outside a departing volunteer’s personal inbox.

Keep a practical handover record:

  • Who holds and manages the domain.
  • Where the website and email are hosted.
  • Who approves renewal and how the account is recovered.
Can our existing .or.ke move to Truehost?

Get the authorisation or EPP code from the current registrar and submit it through our transfer process.

Save your working DNS records first. Moving registration administration does not move website files, mailing lists or hosted inboxes.

How should we budget for the domain?

Allocate a renewal line in the operating budget as well as any separate hosting, mailbox or payment-service costs.

Put the payment date before expiry, and assign approval to a role that remains responsible when project funding or personnel changes.

Registration and continued use
PurchaseCurrent amountBudget entry
Register the selected nameKshs 1,000Initial registration period
Continue the registrationKshs 1,500The next renewal period
What if the address no longer opens?

Check the domain’s registration status first, then check DNS and hosting.

If renewal has been missed, contact the registrar promptly to establish the available recovery action. Updating a website cannot restore an expired registration on its own.
